WHERE DO WE STAND?

Graduation rates appear to have plateaued in Central Texas. The four-year high school graduation rate for the class of 2023 was 90%. From 2015 to 2022, the Central Texas 4-year high school graduation rate was 91%. Central Texas has maintained a higher graduation rate than the State since 2013.

A CLOSER LOOK

Although disparities exist by race and ethnicity, the gap has closed over the last ten years, and most racial and ethnic groups have seen improvements. Hispanic students saw graduation rates improve from 85% for the Class of 2014 to 87% for the class of 2023, while the graduation rate for Black students declined from 85% to 84% over the same time period.

DISPARITY BY INCOME

Gaps in graduation rates by income have widened slightly in recent years, while disparities persist. The E³Alliance reports that the graduation rate for low-income students in the Class of 2023 was 85%, compared to a 96% graduation rate for moderate to high-income students, a gap of 11 percentage points. This gap has narrowed since the Class of 2007, when only 60% of low-income students graduated, compared to 88% of non-low-income students, a gap of 28 percentage points. This gap was narrowest in 2028, when 87% of low-income students graduated high school, compared to 96% of non low-income students (a gap of 7 percentage points).

COMPARING DISTRICTS

Graduation rates for some area districts have improved over time. School districts that experienced an improvement in graduation rates from 2019 to 2023 include Lake Travis, Manor, and Round Rock ISDs. School districts that experienced a decrease in graduation rates over the same time period included Austin, Del Valle, Eanes, Lago Vista, Leander, and Pflugerville ISDs.

A CLOSER LOOK

Almost eight out of ten (79%) of Austin ISD students graduate high school meeting the State’s “college ready” standard. The college readiness indicator in the most recent Texas Academic Performance Report is defined as the percentage of graduates who demonstrated college readiness by meeting specific readiness criteria including Texas Success Initiative (TSI) criteria, earning dual course credits, meeting criteria on Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations, earning an associate’s degree prior to graduation, earning OnRamps course credits, or graduating under an Advanced Diploma Plan and identified as a current Special Education Student.
